Mousse Balls lunar 2.0
For those who haven’t run them yet, MrWolf’s MousseBalls are a modern alternative to traditional mousse inserts or inner tubes. Rather than a solid foam insert (a “bib mousse”), these are modular foam “balls” (segments) that:
- Fill your tire like a mousse but offer more flexibility.
- Let you adjust “hardness” or “feel” by adding or removing balls to suit the terrain or your riding style.
- Reduce operating temperature (thanks to a higher surface-to-volume ratio) by up to 33% compared to standard mousses.
- Be regenerated: the full set includes spare balls so you can refresh sections instead of buying a whole unit.

What’s Lunar Bring to the Table?
Lunar takes the MousseBalls concept further with some new features and refinements:
- Self-lubricating compound. Lunar uses a new elastomer material that’s built to reduce friction without requiring you to slather on silicone grease or gels during installation. In short: less mess, faster mount, fewer opportunities for user error or bad lubrication.
- Plug-&-play readiness. Because of that self-lubricating design, Lunar ships ready to run — out of the box — saving time in the shop or trail prep.
- Same modular structure + adjustability. You can still tweak hardness by adding/removing balls. Use all for faster, firmer feel (desert, Rally-Raid fast terrain, etc.), pull some out or leave spacing for softer, more forgiving grip in Enduro, extreme terrain.
- Improved durability, lower vibration. By dropping temperature and reducing vibration (hysteresis), the Lunar version aims to give better control, improved ride feel, less risk of foam breakdown under harsher use.
Sizing & fit: As always, tire internal volume, carcass stiffness, and rim width matter. Sometimes you may need to add or remove one or two balls to get the “PSI feel” you want.
MBL-1000 - 90/90-21 & 90/100-21
MBL-2000 - 120/80-18, 120/90-18, 140/80-18
MBL-2000BIG - 140/80-18 Harder feel than the MBL-2000
Return policy: Once installed, MousseBalls (or Lunar) can’t be returned. So double-check your model/size before installing.
Feel & break-in: Even though Lunar is self-lubricating, expect a short break-in period. Some early reports on the standard MousseBalls say it takes a ride or two to really settle.
Customizing hardness: You can adjust hardness or firmness by how tightly you pack the balls, or by adjusting spacing between them. More tightly = firmer, less spacing = softer “feel.” But leaving too much space may affect how the tire feels and mounts.
From what users of the standard MousseBalls are saying:
- Riders appreciate the “tube-like” feel—more liveliness than many solid mousse inserts.
- The ability to run mixed terrain (fast, hard, rocky, loose) and tune the firmness is a big benefit.
- Installation is easier than full mousse only in the sense that you deal with segments; but it’s still a bit of work. Lunar will speed the process somewhat via the self-lubrication.
- Durability seems solid: testers with dozens/hundreds of miles report that standard MousseBalls maintain form and firmness fairly well.
